You are Macbeth, Thane (Lord) of Glamis and subject to the King of Scotland, Duncan. Glamis is a small somewhat insignificant fiefdom (territory) and you are ambitous to rise beyond its rank. You are a fierce and widely admired warrior.

After deafeating the rebellious Thane of Cawdor in battle you are approached by three mysterious women who greet you firstly as Thane of Glamis, secondly as Thane of Cawdor, and finally as ""king hereafter"". Once they disappear you are surprised with the news that King Duncan has declared you the new Thane of Cawdor.

King Duncan is visiting your new castle at Inverness when your wife hears of this prophecy. She urges you to kill the King and pin the blame on his guards. This would leave you next in line for the throne.
